CD Review of "Everything But the Blues"
It's fairly difficult not to like a tightly cohesive band with a great
vocalist, and this one is no exception. Brian Neller mans the lead
microphone with an alternating croon and slightly nasal grittiness
that always complements the various musical styles exhibited here.
Neller
and his sidemen (Paul Sanderson - guitar, Fraser Lawrason - fretless
bass and harmony vocals, Pat Quinn and Frank Watt - drums, and Norm
Ryan - saxophone) have created some sort of fusion of bohemian New
York '60s Beat and sophisticated West Coast swing, particularly on the
title track and "Hard Drinkin' Woman", resulting in an
irresistible snappiness pretty well throughout the CD.
Michael Fonfara fills in with B3 layering on "I Can't
Change", which would have been a great waltz to snuggle up with
the sweetie, but the smoothness of the rhythm is oddly broken up,
albeit very briefly, into a stomping strut before easing back into the
glide. Dancers who like some variation in rhythm and tempo from one
song to another, however, will appreciate the diversity here - from
the driving rockabilly pace of "Train" (featuring Dr. John
Bjarnason on harmonica and Paul Sanderson on slide guitar) to the
flute-flavoured smooth jazz of "Uphill Obsession" and
"1001 Reasons" and the funkadelic spirit of "The Money
Game" and "Too Little Too Late".
Lightweight Texas blues-rock is also given a nod on "Cold Hard
Rain", "Face Down in the Mud" and the apt closer,
"Goodbye".
The CD's producer, Paul Irvine, adds flute and tenor sax, and
Joey Irvine and production assistant Will Vapors contribute various
percussive touches and Ken Wannamaker joins the sidemen on back-up
vocals.
Almost all of these tracks are collaborative efforts among various
members of the band, with the exception of "The Money Game",
written solely by Paul Irvine, and Paul Sanderson penning "Ready
to Roll", "Train" and "Goodbye". If you want
a recording that will get you up and hopping, this is it! Cool,
Daddy-O!

over SA, the original members went their separate ways.
PARKLANE has been through a few line up changes but has now settled
with musicians that are not just good friends but awesome technicians
on their individual instruments.. PARKLANE has stepped out of the
comforts of South Africa and is taking on the world with tours
confirmed for 2009 to various countries.. They are currently recording
their first full album in London, Ontario in Canada after showcasing
in the Canadian Music Week Festival in Toronto.

(Al Joynes Intro) - http://www.roadhouseband.ca/
It ain't MOXY, but you
can bet that guitarist Earl Johnson's new covers band, Roadhouse, is
going to include a few of the classic tunes by the Hard Rock group he
founded and remains part of when they debut at the revived Cassidy's
Pub the night of Saturday May 7.
Based on his recent
shows with MOXY, Johnson hasn't lost any moves on the fretboard. He'll
be backed by a solid crew of veterans and you can expect the 4-piece
to romp through all your favourite classic Rock, R&B and Blues
tunes with verve.

"The Kramdens have mastered consistent, intelligent and
quirky pop rock… It's time to give them the attention they
deserve for once."
— Shain Shapiro, ECHO Weekly, November 20, 2008
In the 18
years The Kramdens have been together, they’ve seen a lot. The
road trips. The sound checks. The highs & lows. And
countless changes to a scene that has made both artists and
labels shrug and throw their arms up in the air. But throughout
all these experiences, they've grown, learned,
persevered, and developed a reputation for writing and
performing well-crafted songs and playing them to an audience that becomes
as much a part of the show as the band.
Their latest self-titled album, released in November 2008 by Sunny
Lane Records (Fontana North), showcases their songwriting
coming of age. A more focused, textured and insightful sound has
developed from their 18-month foray into their own studio,
painstakingly finding the right sound, the right arrangement, the
right words to create an album completely unlike their
previous efforts. With songs ranging from the familiar roots
and pop rock sound the band has been known for, to more
introspective ballads, this album is a significant departure for
the band.
Fronted by CBC Radio 3 host Craig Norris, The Kramdens have
performed at countless bars, clubs, festivals and benefits over
the years. They have been a repeat favourite at the Hillside
Festival, and their performance at this year's 25th anniversary festival
was broadcast on CBC Radio 2's Canada Live this past November.
Known for getting crowds of all kinds on their feet and
dancing, the band has proven versatile enough to entertain
equally in any venue, tailoring shows to their crowd and
delighting audiences at every turn.
There are a number of ways to identify a great rock band. The
number of records they've recorded, the number of hotel rooms
trashed, the number of rehab programs
completed… but there are only two that count: how long
they've been together and how good the music is. The Kramdens
have been around for more than a decade and their music
speaks for itself." — Bill Stunt, CBC Radio
